The Mohawk Valley Freedom School (MVFS) is in the process of forming. The idea of launching a Freedom School came about in the midst of austerity measures unleashed on local schools and how we can respond to this attack on education. Freedom Schools were initially launched in 1964 during the Civil Rights Movement to provide an education rooted in social justice to Southern Black students shut out of the school system. It is in this tradition and in the spirit of popular education and social justice that members of the community are launching the Mohawk Valley Freedom School.
Although members of Occupy Utica are involved with the MVFS, we intend this to be a community-wide endeavor. We are currently in the process of reaching out to various community organizations and various individuals to see what people want and what people need in the form of community oriented education firmly rooted in concepts of social justice. We intend to work with the community, not for the community as we are driven by ideas of participatory democracy and solidarity.
Please read the “About” section to learn more about what the MVFS is and please contact us if you are interested in getting involved with the Mohawk Valley Freedom School. We are looking for volunteers, organizers, educators and will begin the process of recruiting students for classes.
